Back in the 1970s, steep gas prices caused by the energy crisis had a seismic impact on the kinds of cars folks wanted to buy. The fuel-slurping land barges that had previously ruled the highways were out, replaced by efficient compact hatchbacks.

These days, stratospheric gas prices have made hatchbacks heroes once again, and you'd be hard-pressed to find one more heroic than the 2009 Honda Fit. The Fit was likable enough when it was introduced in 2007, but a redesign for 2009 has endowed it with upgrades that make it an even more appealing sidekick.

In other words, as a truck, the Dakota did all that was expected — plus, its innovative under-seat rear storage was an added bonus. When viewed in a broader context, though, the Dakota was less impressive. Even though our Laramie tester featured items nothing else in the class even offers, it was still frightfully expensive given its industrial interior and punishing ride. This truck feels old, even though it's only been around since 2004.

The cabin both looks and feels plush, thanks to the presence of high-end design cues and the tactile surfaces that cover the top half of the dash. The leather is supple and nicely stitched. Knobs and vents in the cabin are ringed with metallic accents that impart a high-end feel.

Tell a fellow car buff you drive a 2008 BMW M3 (or any other member of the M family) and you might as well tell them you broke 70 on your last round of golf, or that you're taking Scarlett Johansson out for drinks.
